Dear Maureen, I’m Pete Baklinski, and this is your Canadian Pro-Life News Bits – where I let you know what’s happening on our country’s pro-life and pro-family front.
So much good news is happening in Canada and the U.S. on the life and family front this week. I almost don’t know where to begin or how I will keep this short.
For starters, my colleague Josie Luetke penned a report on Wednesday about the good news that Ontario’s second-largest Catholic school board overwhelmingly voted against “Pride” flags being flown or displayed inside or outside its buildings. Josie, who gave a fantastic speech at the board meeting in which this was decided, wrote that she was both “awed and amazed” by what happened.
In another piece of good news, an ombudsman for CBC has surprisingly agreed with a complaint from our director of political operations, Jack Fonseca, who pointed out that a CBC report about a Catholic school trustee in Alberta who opposed the LGBT agenda in Catholic schools was biased and unfair. The ombudsman ruled that CBC’s coverage of the story “violated” the network’s journalistic standards and practices. I’m glad to see Jack's complaint was taken seriously.
In more good news, some Canadian pro-abortion groups are talking about having to scale back and even shutter their doors after the Federal government declined to renew funding for the upcoming year. Praise God! Any organization that helps murder preborn Canadian babies has no place in a civilized country. I hope all of them close.
In other good news, a Canadian Catholic bishop has come out strongly denouncing abortion and calling for the recognition of a ‘fundamental human right to life.’ Bishop Mark Hagemoen of Saskatoon also declared Sunday, Jan. 26 in his diocese as a Day of Prayer for Reverence for Life. Bravo.
Don’t miss the good news in the “inspiring stories” section about the busload of young Canadians we sent down to the March for Life in Washington, D.C., last week. The Catholic Register did a great job covering the story, interviewing three of our staff.
It would be remiss of me not to briefly outline the astounding pro-life and pro-family gains happening in the U.S. under the new Trump administration. These include pardoning 23 pro-life advocates, reinstating the pro-life “Mexico City Policy,” enforcing the pro-life Hyde Amendment, and protecting children from chemical and surgical gender mutilation, just to name a few. To top it all off, both President Trump and Vice-President JD Vance addressed the U.S. March for Life, the first by video, the second in person. There is certainly every indication that life is beginning to win big time in America.
Make sure you catch the video of the week, which captured the beautiful moment when one of the female pro-life advocates who the Biden administration unjustly jailed was reunited with her husband and young child. The joy of the reunion will bring tears to your eyes.
Don’t miss my reflection at the end about Liberal Leadership front-runner Mark Carney and his stance on a pressing social issue that makes him unfit for office.
Top Canadian pro-life stories you need to know about
Diocese of Saskatoon: Canadian bishop denounces abortion, calls for recognition of ‘fundamental human right to life’
“Each young human person shares the fundamental human right to life that we as Canadians celebrate and support on so many other fronts.”
Comment: Thank you, Bishop Magemoen, for being such an outspoken defender of life.
CBC: Fredericton councillors vote to buy former abortion centre Clinic 554
“The property that once housed the Morgentaler Clinic and then Clinic 554 will be acquired by the City of Fredericton next month.”
Comment: This is a location where countless thousands of preborn New Brunswick babies were ruthlessly slaughtered for some three decades. It's like buying Auschwitz. Deputy Mayor Jocelyn Pike told CBC that the building might be used for municipal office space as city staff are "outgrowing city hall." Can you imagine working in an office space where preborn babies were brutally murdered? Either Clinic 554 should be bulldozed to the ground, or it should be used as a memorial to victims of abortion.
Canadian Press: Canadian abortion group says it may have to shutter after losing government funding
“A national group that helps people who have trouble accessing abortion services says it may be forced to shut down in several months after Health Canada declined to renew its funding for the upcoming year.”
Comment: Abortion Care Canada is an anti-life and anti-child organization that exists to promote the killing of the most vulnerable members of the human family. I hope a future Poilievre Conservative government will entirely defund every organization in our country that promotes the killing of preborn Canadian babies. Children are our country's future. We should be doing everything in our power to protect their lives.
Run With Life: Joyce Arthur's libelous attacks on Pregnancy Care Centres
“Arthur is a master at misinformation and disinformation as she continues her hideous attacks on these centres. You would think the government would verify Arthur's false claims before bowing to her unrelenting hatred of all things pro-life.”
Catholic Register: Charitable status risks even with prorogation
“The resignation of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as Liberal Party leader and the prorogation of Parliament may have postponed a non-confidence vote and an immediate election, but has not averted the risk of certain organizations losing their charitable status on the basis of religious belief or disagreement with government policy, say experts speaking on behalf of stakeholders.”
Campaign Life Coalition: Ontario Catholic school board bans ALL pride flags from schools
“This is a story of how a school board changed course, withstanding intense intimidation tactics, to do what would have formerly seemed impossible in today’s culture.”
Toronto Star: This GTA board just voted to restrict the Pride flag inside schools. It’s stoking intense division
Rebel News: CBC ombudsman slams network for bias in LGBTQ-Catholic dispute coverage
“CBC Ombudsman Maxime Bertrand ruled that the coverage violated the network’s own Journalistic Standards and Practices, which require fairness and the inclusion of divergent viewpoints.”
Comment: While Canadians who defend life, family, faith, and freedom are well aware of CBC's bias against everything they stand for, its nice—for at least this one time—to see this government-funded behemoth finally admitting to getting something wrong.
LifeSiteNews: Poilievre declines to promise government action against gender ideology if elected
“Conservative Party of Canada leader Pierre Poilievre told a reporter that he is aware of “only two genders,” but he stopped short on promising a Conservative government would take action to stop the spread of extreme forms of gender ideology that claims there are many genders.”
Catholic Register: Trump, U.S. March for Life energizes Canadians in attendance
“Over 40 teenage and young adult Canadian pro-life activists basked in a 2025 US. National March for Life atmosphere on Jan. 24 energized by week one actions taken by President Donald Trump’s administration.”
LifeNews: Here’s 9 Pro-Life Actions President Trump Took During His First Week
“In his first week of the new term, President Donald Trump took several significant actions to advance pro-life policies.”
Live Action: VICTORY: Lawfare against Daleiden and Merritt, who exposed Planned Parenthood, is over
“A court battle lasting nearly a decade has come to an end for two pro-life undercover journalists who exposed Planned Parenthood’s alleged fetal body part trafficking scandal.”
Live Action: Faced with heartbreaking pregnancy diagnoses, Jessica chose life twice with no regrets
“I’ve never regretted my choices and would do it all over again. Choosing abortion would have destroyed me, my family, and my marriage. I’m not saying it was an easy road because it wasn’t. But having pro-life doctors who walked alongside was very important.”

This is such a beautiful video of the release of Christian pro-life advocate Bevelyn Williams, who was unjustly imprisoned by the Biden regime for her pro-life activism. President Trump signed her pardon last week.+++
Maureen, Frontrunner Liberal leadership candidate Mark Carney admitted in 2022 that he’s "proud" to live in a country which allows its youngest and most vulnerable members to be intentionally targeted for destruction via abortion.
Here’s what he posted in June of 2022, shortly after the overturning of Roe v. Wade in the US: “I’m proud to live in a country where a woman’s right to choose is so strongly supported. But the devastating decision today in the US is a clear reminder that progress should never be taken for granted. Our commitment to protecting fundamental rights must be unwavering.”
Carney claims to be Catholic while championing the killing of preborn Canadian children. He must know that abortion is expressly condemned by the Catholic Church.
“Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law,” states the Catechism of the Catholic Church (2271).
Carney cannot be a Catholic in good standing and champion the killing of preborn humans.
As I posted on social media about this: “Carney backs preborn baby carnage. He’s unfit to govern.”
The truth is that any politician who promotes killing the weakest and most vulnerable among us is unfit to rule others. One cannot both be a good ruler and a champion of killing.
What Canada needs today are fearless leaders who will champion the preborn. They are, after all, our country’s hope and future. May it please God to send us such a leader soon!
In the meantime, be bold and daring for life!
