Dear Maureen, I’m Pete Baklinski, and this is your Canadian Pro-Life News Bits – where I let you know what’s happening on our country’s pro-life and pro-family front.
All of us at Campaign Life Coalition are thanking God that the Carney Liberals did not strip pro-life and religious groups of their charitable status in the budget released on Tuesday. We issued a press release sharing the good news. The good news has been picked up by a few outlets. Make sure you check out the stories.
My colleague Jack Fonseca has written an article exposing how Conservative Party insiders manipulate nomination races to block grassroots candidates, especially social conservatives, and he argues for reforms to restore real democracy in the party. It’s worth reading.
There is some horrible news coming out of Quebec. The province now has the highest euthanasia rate in the world. Tragically, MAiD killings make up almost 8 percent of all deaths. In each one of these deaths, a healthy and more powerful person kills a weaker and more vulnerable person. MAiD, no matter the reason, is always evil and stands against God’s prohibition against killing. The huge number of MAiD killings in Quebec is what happens when a people reject God and their religious roots. This people is committing cultural suicide, first by abortion, now by euthanasia. God have mercy on Quebec, the province which was once the jewel of the Catholic faith in Canada.
Make sure you check out the must-see video of the week in which my colleague Josie Luetke appears on the “Talk Truth” podcast to explain why we’re taking legal action against Parliament Hill Protective Services for telling us that we could not display abortion imagery during an event we held there. Watching this is the best way to get up to speed with this important free-speech case.
The November edition of CLC National News, our monthly newsletter, is now available online. You can view and print the newsletter by clicking on this link. Don’t miss this month’s letter to pro-lifers from CLC President Jeff Gunnarson on how we are called to be salt and light. Read Jeff’s full letter here.
Don’t miss my reflection at the end about why I was so relieved when I searched for two key words in the Carney Liberal budget and found they did not show up.
Campaign Life Coalition: VICTORY: Churches and Pro-Life Groups Spared in Carney Budget
“Canadians from across the country pushed back strongly against these proposals, and the government listened,” said Jeff Gunnarson, National President of Campaign Life Coalition. “This is a victory for religious freedom and for the Canadian values of helping the vulnerable, offering a compassionate hand, and being present to those in crisis.”
Catholic Register: Pro-lifers relieved charitable status remains intact
LifeSiteNews: Carney’s budget spares tax status of Canadian churches, pro-life groups after backlash
Campaign Life Coalition: How to fix a corrupt Conservative Party nomination process
“If you were to take a poll of Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) members asking what is the thing that most disturbs them about the CPC, I'll bet that the anti-democratic nomination process and staggering number of candidate appointments made in the 2025 election cycle would be right up there at the top.”
LifeSiteNews: Canadian pro-lifer acquitted of all charges after arrested for defending the unborn
“Alexander Kissiakov of Montreal…was arrested and charged for standing in front of an abortion clinic handing out pamphlets to pregnant women to tell them about the psychological consequences of abortion.”
LifeSiteNews: ‘Left to Die’ campaign demands protections for babies born alive after abortions
“Prolife Alberta's goal is to expose the Alberta Health Services policy that allows babies born alive after botched abortions to die without care.”
Euthanasia Prevention Coalition: Quebec now has the highest euthanasia rate in the world
“Quebec remains the world leader in medical assistance in dying with 6,268 (7.9% of deaths).”
Run With Life: Fighting MAID - Priests must speak out against euthanasia
“All of us, clergy included, need to speak out publicly against Canada's evil euthanasia regime.”
LifeNews: Nebraska Governor Signs Order Defunding Planned Parenthood
“The order bars Planned Parenthood affiliates and other abortion companies from the state’s Medicaid program, ensuring ‘not going to be a penny of Nebraska tax dollars’ supports the abortion industry.”
Live Action: She never conceived again after her abortion, but God redeemed it all
“Abortion robbed her of the chance to be a mother, but after God redeemed her, she was able to help other women find hope and healing.”
Unplanned Stories: Despite pressure to abort, she chose life for her son while serving in the U.S. Navy.
“She rediscovered strength in faith when an unexpected pregnancy challenged her during her first relationship and military service. Today, she embraces family and the life God has given her.”

Talk Truth welcome Hatim Kheir, a lawyer with Charter Advocates funded by the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms, and Josie Luetke, Director of Education & Advocacy for Campaign Life Coalition. The discussion centers on Campaign Life Coalition’s legal challenge against the rules prohibiting “abortion victim photography” on Parliament Hill. Josie and Hatim explain the events leading to the legal dispute, the significance of the contested images in pro-life advocacy, and the broader implications for freedom of expression in Canada.
Maureen, all of us at Campaign Life Coalition were anxiously anticipating the release of Tuesday’s federal budget for one big reason:
Either the Carney Liberal budget would strip churches and pro-life groups of their charitable status, or it wouldn’t.
You may remember that the federal government received two committee recommendations in December 2024 to determine what would be in this week’s budget. Recommendations 429 and 430 would strip pro-life and religious organizations of their charitable status.
I laid out the ramifications of adopting these recommendations in a piece published in the Western Standard earlier this year:
It must be stated clearly that this isn’t just some banal proposal — it’s a direct assault on religious freedom and the values that have built this nation, founded, as our Charter states, on principles that “recognize the supremacy of God.”
In short, if this proposal were to be adopted, the impact would simply be catastrophic: churches would close as the Canadian Revenue Agency would seize their assets; food banks run by churches — gone; shelters, addiction recovery programs, and youth ministries — shut down; Christian voices in the public square — silenced.
This is more than an issue of taxation — it’s an attack on our Canadian way of life. If we don’t oppose this now, the consequences will be irreversible.
All true.
It was late Tuesday afternoon when the budget finally appeared online.
I remember opening up the massive 493-page document and running keyword searches regarding the fate of pro-life and religious groups. There was not a single mention of “abortion” or “religion,” two key words that were part of the original recommendations. I quickly did other searches for related keywords, thinking that maybe the language had been changed in the budget. But there was nothing.
Thanks be to God, the recommendations did not show up in the document. With immense relief, I knew they had been dropped.
This is in no small part thanks to so many of you who signed petitions, wrote letters, made phone calls, and, in short, decided to do something. Thank you. The effort clearly worked. It goes to show what happens when we step out and send that email or make that call. It truly does make a difference.
As my boss Jeff Gunnarson said in Tuesday’s press release:
“Canadians from across the country pushed back strongly against these proposals, and the government listened… This victory belongs to the concerned citizens across Canada who took the time to sign a petition or write a letter to their MP or the Finance Minister. This proves that when enough people speak out, good things can happen.”
Yes, thanks be to God.
Keep up the good work. Your voice matters and you are making a difference.
Continue to be bold and daring for life!
