Scratch Board Drawing

For this assignment we were given a task to choose a black and white photo from our camera roll that we were going to scratch out on a scratch board. We had to crop the photo to the exact size of the scratch board so everything would fit properly. The reason we had to use black and white photos is because the scratch board was black and when you scratch it, it becomes white underneath. Also throughout this project we had to use equal amounts of shades of black, white and gray.

Before we started our actual individual project, we practiced with a scale, practicing black and white and gray scales to get an understanding of what were going to do. To start off, I chose a photo of my dog and then printed it out, and cropped it to the right size. As I've said in previous artist statements, I find it easier to do the outline of the image because I think it makes it look more real and I find it easier. The materials I used throughout this project was basically just the scratchboard and what I used to scratch it. I had to be very careful throughout the process because it wasn't like using a pencil; I couldn't just erase the scratches I had made. If I messed up, I had to deal with it.

There are a couple of mistakes that I have made by scratching too hard or too much, creating too much white. One struggle I did have with this project was not having an equal scale of black whites and grays. My dog is white with a couple of dark spots so most of my project was scratched very white. Overall I thought it looked good but later I realized that it had zero to very little gray spots on my project. So the mistake I had made on this project and probably could've been done differently is making sure I have the equal balance of all the shades. However I don't know if I would change it because I really like how it turned out.
