For this assignment the task was to create another sculpture out of material of choice. It was a very open assignment, where we got to choose what you wanted to create and what material you wanted to use but still trying to stay away from materials like paint or paper because it is more 2D. Although the material did have to represent something about you. Anyways, for this assignment I chose to make a sunflower out of wire. I chose a sunflower because sunflowers are my favorite flower and they remind me of happiness and sunshine and summer.
For the materials, I chose wire because I thought that it would be probably the best material to use because I wanted to make it look simple by creating like that outline so it was not filled in like the petals. I also hadn't used wire since last year so I thought I would try something different. To start of I used two thick wires and twisted them together so that the stem of the sunflower would be more stable and the twists added more character to it as well. I also used thick wire for the head of the sunflower and used excess wire from the stem and the head to connect the two together by using pliers. After I was finished with those parts, I used thinner wire for the petals because I wanted it to have different sizes to also add contrast and character. At the end, I needed to make a stand so that the sunflower would officially be 3 dimensional. So what I did was take a thick piece of wire and connected it to the bottom of the stem and then created a circle kind of spiral motion that sits on the surface so the sunflower can stand up.
Overall, I am very pleased with how my project turned out and I think I did a good job on it and took my time with it and making the wires as tight as could so the sculpture is not floppy. However if i had to go back and change one thing about the sculpture I think that would be to make sure that the wires are really tight and maybe try t find a different technique of how to do that. For the most part they are tight and the petals don't move that much but I would like to make it even tighter so it is definitely sturdy. This is because the head of the sunflower that is connected to the stem of the sunflower is a little bit wobbly, so sometimes the head moves a little bit. Anyways, I am still very proud of how I did on my sunflower project and I would probably use wire again in the future.
