Oil Pastel on Mix Media
For my sustained investigation number 14 I wanted to continue what I had done with my previous sustained investigation. For that, I decided to switch up from normal colors you would see on a person for a regular portrait. I decided to make the skin color different and just use a bunch of bright colors because I thought that would look different and more attention-grabbing.
To start off, I used a photo reference and I went off from that. I used a close up angle because I wanted to play with perspective and continue to get better at different angles of people's faces. So I once I was done sketching, I colored the background first which is really a small portion of it so it was pretty simple. After I went in with the face and I used pink for the face as you can see above and I also use my finger to blend in certain areas and make highlights and shadows etc. Then, I did the hair and then the glasses and then the eyes lastly.
Overall I really like the way this one came out because it's super bright and it's a different material. I haven't really used oil pastel much and my previous artworks but I do like the way it looks. However I don't have much color options for oil pastels so I wish I could have done the hair a brighter color just to kind of go along with the theme but I didn't have many options as I said so I used brown. The eyes were also very difficult to do because the head of the oil pastel is very big, which makes it hard to get in small areas. However, I still am pleased with the way it turned out.
