Stars and Stripes

For this assignment, there were specific instructions. Including, only using certain colors like red, white, blue and black. The project also had to have unity, value and shape . I knew that I really wanted to incorporate a dog into my piece. I first thought of adding the stripes in the back behind the dog but I still needed to add shape and value. After a few different sketches, I thought of adding a bandana with stars on the dog. To add value I used grays for the dogs eyes.

The materials I used for this project were acrylic paint, pencil, and sharpie on watercolor paper. I used a painters tape border and I also used painters tape to make the stripes have clean edges. I started out with sketching this piece in pencil, I then used a ruler to make the stripes straight across my artwork, then erased some and sketched out the dog. After, I knew I was ready to start painting so I got my materials then started with painting the stripes red. After I had finished the stripes I removed the tape and began to paint the dog black. To add value to the dog I tried my best to add grays to the black. I finished off by painting the bandana blue and then sketched the stars over it for the outline of the stars.

Overall, I am really proud of the way my project turned out because I think I took a lot of time and painted very carefully to make sure I staying in the lines and had nice clean edges. One thing I would do different next time is to make sure I used the right paper for the right materials I'm using. This is because before I used the water color paper, I didn't check the paper and I used drawing paper instead and the paint ruined it and I had to redo my sketches on a different piece of paper.
