Sgraffito Tile

Koi Fish Sgraffito Tile

For this sgraffito assignment, I decided I wanted to create a tile with the Yin Yang idea represented by koi fish. Koi fish have always been an interest of mine, I find them very elegant and beautiful and what perfect way to create them on a sgraffito tile.

I started by tracing my design onto the clay through trace paper. Once I had that finished, I moved on to smoothing the edges of the clay and cutting the clay to a perfect circular shape around the koi. Once I had the shape i wanted, I took the black coating glaze and went over the complete tile. After I was finished with that, I carved out the ideal areas of my tile and then added the final clear glaze to get it to its completion that it is now.

This project was really fun for me and brought me back to my 3D design class. I really enjoyed what I had created and the process of it. A struggle I had along the process was figuring out the right places to scratch out without making any mistakes. This was difficult for me to do because if I had scratched out anything I wasn't supposed to, i would not be able to fix it. Overall, I think it turned out really nice and smootly.
