Observational Drawing

Leaves: Still Life

For this assignment, we were tasked to create a still life of any still life object(s) for this, I chose to draw leaves. This assignment is familiar to me because I have done it in my previous art class, 2-D Design. I started by going outside into my side yard and I found some leave that I liked so I picked them up and brought them inside. It was a dewy morning, so the leaves were a bit wet.

Once I brought the leaves to my desk I set them on my drawing paper and I realized they were leaving marks on the paper. So I thought to use this to my advantage. I pressed the leaves on the paper with more pressure and It left an imprint. So as you can see above, the background prints are made from the leaves I focused on to draw. The materials I used for this piece were colored pencils and regular pencils for shading. Anyway, I laid the leaves out in front of me and drew exactly how the leaves looked to me, Now this was quite hard for me because I can be a perfectionist when it comes to real life drawings so I tried to make it look different than from how I was really looking at it. I then began going in with my colored pencils to create the image of the leaves.

Overall, I am pleased with drawing. It's not my favorite only because I don't like making things look realistic, like adding my own twist into art that I create so again I felt like it had to be perfect which is not what I like. Moving forward, I think it is important to practice shading with colored pencils to leave no white space.
