Linocut Relief Print

For this assignment we chose a picture to carve out on a cork board material and then print it. The materials I used for my project were; the picture I had chose which was of my dog. The other materials I used were the carving board, the carving tool, ink, and my printing paper. This project had a lot of steps to it, so the first thing I did after I chose my picture was go onto this app called Acorn to edit my photo. As you can see in the middle photo above, that is how I edited my photo because I needed to know where I was going to carve out. The first photo, on the left is the normal photo before editing, and the middle one is after editing.

After I edited my photo, I cropped it to the size of the carving board, then I printed it out. After printing it, I flipped the paper over and scribbled all over the back with my pencil. Once I flipped it back over, I traced it out over the board, so it left the trace marks on the board so that way I knew where to carve out. I carved out the white areas on the picture and when I was done carving, I was ready to begin printing, I took an ink roller and rolled it in the ink and then over the carving board. I then flipped it over onto practice paper to get a feel of how it worked. Then I put it under a tool that pushed it down and help all the ink go onto the paper.

After my practice I realized that I needed to add more ink and carve out more pieces. As you can see in the photo nearest to the right, there are small black spots on my print so I wanted to go back and fix that. I did five different prints. I had the original, black and white one, the artist choice, alternate background, and hand color.

Overall I thought this project was different and a fun experience and super fun and easy to do. If I were to do it again I would make sure I carved out more so there were no extra marks and to add a little bit more ink. However, I am happy with the way all my different prints came out.
