Butterfly and a bee
7"x10"
For this assignment, the task was to create an art piece from the splattered black ink that was already on the paper when given. As you can see in the picture above, the black spot (not including the antennas) is where I decided to make that the butterflies body. It wasn't super simple to come up with though. At first, in my eyes, it looked like a birds eye view of a lions body. However, I wasn't confident that people would understand that or even see what I had made. After I kept turning my paper many different ways. I saw a butterfly body and decided to make one.
Also, as you can see in the top right corner, there was a black ink dot which I decided to make into a bee because I thought it went well with the butterfly. The materials I used for this piece were, colored pencils and a sketching pencil. I chose colored pencil because it is a material I am familiar with and I thought it would be easier to handle with the smaller detailing. I also really like to create a dark edge affect and then lighter in the middle. I started off by adding a border and then sketching the wings of the butterfly. After, I started to design the details of the wings and then began filling them in with the colors as seen above. After I was finished with the butterfly and the bee, I used a blue colored pencil and lightly colored a background to fill the negative space. I decided to make this butterfly because I really enjoy drawing animals/insects and flowers. Although this drawing wasn't easy for me to make. I had a really difficult time, making the wings even with each other as well as the wing detailing to match each other.
Overall, I am happy with the way my artwork came out, I think it shows my patience through the neatness of the wing detailing and the strokes of the colored pencils. One thing I wish to do different it to make the background more exciting instead of just one color, or maybe try adding more colors to it. In my future projects, I will try to make sure I am using my creativity to make backgrounds not as bland.
