As part of my Inventory Techniques unit, I was required to reflect on the role of a workshop trainer in managing materials effectively. The assignment asked me to:
1. Outline the measures I would put in place to control material usage by students to reduce wastage.
2. Explain two circumstances that may necessitate emergency purchasing.
This task was designed to help me appreciate the importance of inventory control, accountability, and preparedness in a training workshop.

As a workshop trainer, I would put in place the following measures to minimize material wastage by students:
1. Proper Lesson Planning & Preparation
Before practical lessons, I would prepare detailed lesson plans and demonstrations.
This ensures students clearly understand the task before materials are issued.
Example: In a cookery lesson, I would demonstrate how to measure flour or oil correctly before students start their practice.
2. Controlled Issuance of Materials
Materials would be issued in measured quantities based on the specific requirements of each activity.
Example: Giving each student the exact portion of fabric or wood they need, rather than free access to stock.
3. Reuse and Recycling of Materials
Encourage students to reuse leftover items and recycle off-cuts where possible.
Example: Metal off-cuts in a welding workshop can be used for practice joints instead of being discarded.
4. Close Supervision During Practical Sessions
Continuous monitoring helps identify and correct misuse of materials immediately.

Example: In a catering workshop, if an oven breaks down during a lesson, a quick replacement or repair is required to avoid disrupting student training.
2. Sudden Increase in Student Numbers or Training Activities
If more students join the class, or additional lessons are scheduled, materials may run out faster than anticipated.
Example: If a hospitality class doubles in size, consumables like flour, sugar, or detergents may need to be purchased immediately.
