Introduction to Workshop Planning & Management
The Workshop Planning and Management unit is a core component of my Term 1 training at the Kenya Technical Trainers College (KSTVET). The unit is designed to equip trainee trainers with the ability to plan, organize, design, and manage a functional and safe workshop that meets the requirements of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
Workshops are the heart of practical training in TVET institutions. They provide learners with the opportunity to apply theory into practice through hands-on activities, demonstrations, and projects. For this reason, proper planning and management of workshops is critical for ensuring that training is effective, resources are well-utilized, and the learning environment remains safe, efficient, and conducive.
In this unit, I have been introduced to a variety of concepts, practices, and procedures that a TVET trainer must master to manage workshops successfully. These include:
Workshop Safety and First Aid: Learning how to identify hazards, implement safety measures, and demonstrate first aid procedures in case of accidents.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Identifying different PPE and ensuring they are correctly used by learners and staff.
Procurement and Budgeting: Understanding how to plan, cost, and acquire workshop tools, equipment, and consumables.
Workshop Layout and Design: Drawing and modeling effective workshop layouts that promote safety, accessibility, and workflow efficiency.
Measuring and Evaluating Workshop Space: Determining whether a space is adequate for training purposes based on calculations and standards.
Maintenance and Record Keeping: Preparing maintenance schedules, checklists, and reports to ensure all facilities, machines, and equipment remain in good working condition.
This section of my E Portfolio documents my assignments and practical tasks (A–I) for the Workshop Planning and Management unit. It contains reports, drawings, photographs, videos, and reflections that demonstrate my understanding and ability to apply these skills in real and simulated environments.
By completing this unit, I am better prepared to become a competent technical trainer who can organize workshops that are safe, resourceful, and supportive of effective learning.
