Topics 6–8: Conflict Drives and Management
These topics focused on identifying the sources of workplace conflict and applying appropriate strategies to resolve them. I learned about negotiation, mediation, and emotional intelligence as essential tools in maintaining harmony and teamwork within an organization.

Case Study: Conflict Analysis on Gender and Physical Discrimination
1. Background
The video “Module 4: Role Play” presents a workplace scenario involving a group of employees assigned a joint task with a tight deadline. The team comprises both male and female members, as well as individuals of differing physical appearances and abilities.
At the start, the group’s performance was hindered by biases and discriminatory attitudes, particularly against a female member and a short male colleague. Their suggestions and efforts were not taken seriously, leading to delays, frustration, and conflict within the team.
Forms of Discrimination Demonstrated
The role plays highlighted two major forms of discrimination:
1. Gender Discrimination
o The female member faced exclusion from decision-making and active participation.
o Some male colleagues doubted her competence, assigning her lighter, less valued duties.
o Her opinions were dismissed, reflecting gender stereotypes about leadership and technical capability.
2. Physical Discrimination
o A shorter male team member was mocked and underestimated due to his height.
o His input was overlooked, and he was not trusted with key responsibilities.
o This caused him to feel isolated and demoralized, reducing his motivation and contribution.
These discriminatory actions created division within the team and weakened their ability to collaborate effectively.
What Caused the Conflict
The conflict was caused by a combination of attitudes, communication breakdown, and unequal treatment:
Bias and Prejudice: Team members held negative assumptions about others based on gender and appearance.
Lack of Respect and Inclusion: Some members failed to treat others as equals, damaging trust.
Poor Communication: Members stopped listening to one another, which led to misunderstandings and tension.
Unequal Role Distribution: Tasks were not assigned according to ability or skill, causing resentment among the discriminated members.
As a result, teamwork broke down, productivity slowed, and the task could not be completed on time.
When Teamwork Was Addressed
Teamwork was finally addressed after the conflict reached a critical level. The team realized that their negative attitudes were the main reason for their failure.
They held a discussion to acknowledge their mistakes and agreed to treat everyone fairly.
Each member began to recognize the value of diversity, understanding that everyone had unique strengths.
They reallocated roles based on skill rather than gender or physical features.
Open communication and cooperation improved significantly.
Once teamwork and mutual respect were embraced, the group completed the task successfully and on time.
Lessons Learned
1. Discrimination—whether gender-based or physical—destroys team morale and productivity.
2. Effective teamwork requires mutual respect, equality, and inclusion.
3. Each member’s contribution is valuable regardless of physical or gender differences.
4. Open communication helps resolve conflicts and build trust.
5. Diversity should be viewed as a strength that enhances creativity and performance.
The demonstration in “Module 4: Role Play” clearly shows how gender and physical discrimination can lead to serious workplace conflict. However, through open dialogue, respect, and collaboration, the team overcame their differences and achieved success.
This case emphasizes that inclusive teamwork and equality are vital for effective leadership and organizational success.
