Sarmatians

The Sarmatians were Iranian equestrian nomadic tribes who overpowered the Scythians and replaced them in the Northern Black Sea region. The Sarmatian culture was prevalent in the area from the II century BC up until the IV century AD. The Sarmatian collection mainly includes the items found during the kurgan excavations. The highlight of the collection is undoubtedly the findings from the Mikhailovka burial place (1st century AD). The objects from the other kurgans and burial places (Chaush, Gradeshka, Kholmskoe and Belolesie) are mostly ceramics (local and Roman) military objects and jewelry
