IGEM RAS

The Ore and Petrographic Museum is the legal successor of the Geological (Geological and Mineralogical) Museum named after Peter the Great of the Imperial Academy of Sciences, later the Geological Museum of Peter the Great of the USSR Academy of Sciences. The Museum contains unique exhibits of the Mineral Cabinet of the St. Petersburg Kunstkamera from the inventory of V.M. Severgin of 1820, as well as historical collections and archival materials of outstanding Russian expeditions of the late 18th - early 19th centuries.

The work of the Ore and Petrographic Museum is directly related to the specialized disciplines developing at IGEM RAS. The museum has regional collections representing igneous rocks and the main types of ores in most ore regions of Russia and a number of foreign countries, as well as thematic collections characterizing the features of magmatism and ore formation at individual stages and geodynamic settings that manifested themselves during the evolution of the Earth.

The museum funds are used for scientific and educational purposes. Partnership agreements have been concluded between IGEM RAS (RPM IGEM RAS) with more than 30 leading museums and research institutes in Russia and foreign countries.

The Ore and Petrographic Museum, as a research museum, was registered in the All-Russian Register of Museums on May 16, 1996.
