The Tomb of King Muryeong (r. 501-523), the 25th ruler of Baekje (18 BCE – 660 CE), and his consort was excavated in 1971, leading to the discovery of many precious artifacts, including these gold diadem ornaments, which were originally attached to King Muryeong’s crown. They feature thin gold plates decorated with asymmetrically aligned openwork honeysuckle scroll and flame designs. The ornaments are also attached with 127 gold spangles, each with a diameter of about 5mm. In an ancient book about the history of the Tang Dynasty, Jiu Tangshu (The Book of Tang), it is recorded that Baekje’s kings wore “a black satin cap decorated with golden flowers.”
