Museum of the History of the Resort-City of Sochi

The Museum of the History of the Resort City of Sochi (until 1980 - the Sochi Museum of Local Lore) was created in 1920. The foundation of the museum was the collection of the Sochi branch of the Caucasian Mountain Club, which existed in the Sochi settlement from 1902 to 1917. The collection included samples of minerals, herbariums, household items of the peoples of the Caucasus. On July 9, 1920, the Sochi regional executive committee decided to create a local history museum. The original collection of the museum consisted of about 120 items.

At present, the fund of the Museum of the History of the Resort City of Sochi has more than 100 thousand items. These are collections of paintings, graphics, sculptures, numismatics, weapons, archeology, rare books, documents, photographs and negatives, objects of applied art, household items and ethnography, printed materials and others.

One of the valuable collection of the museum is the collection of items made of precious metals and stones, numbering over 400 items. Among them is a unique collection of antique jewelry of the 1st-3rd centuries AD, found in 1960 in the village of Loo in the Lazarevsky district of Sochi. The items were found during the construction of one of the buildings of the "Magadan" boarding house, workers digging a foundation pit discovered a scattering of gold items. A rich burial place was destroyed. A significant part of the items consisted of women's gold jewelry, made with high skill and grace. These are beads made of amber and jet in a gold setting; earrings, decorated with filigree, grain, inlay; a bottle for incense, a needle case, a ring with a gem (intalio) depicting a woman's profile, over 200 golden small buttons, pendants, sewn-on brooches,
