Over 70 pieces (of which only one bears a date, of 80 BC) which were found at sites near Su-yu-t'u %iEbt, north-west of Tun-huang, in 1981, have yielded information regarding the organisation and subordination of companies (hou-kuan), the system of tallies and inventories of defensive equipment (HCSCWC, pp. 1-14, with transcriptions Of on pp. 9-14; photographs at the outset ofthe volume). particular interest are four strips (D38: 3, 4* 7A, 7B) which carry the text of an ordinance which provided for rewards to be given for successful action against the Hsiung-nu. The rewards took the form of orders of aristocratic rank (chueh ) or of gold, and they are on a substantially more generous scale than those seen elsewhere.
