Gold seal: ‘Seal of the King of Dian’

Western Han (206 BC – AD 8)

Height 1.8 cm, Width 2.4 cm, Weight 89.5 g.

Excavated in 1956 from the King of Dian’s tomb, Zhaishan, Pudingxian, Yunnan Province

Made of gold with a snake handle, this square seal is inscribed with four characters ‘Seal of the King of Dian’. The workmanship is refined and the inscription uses the distinctive square and smooth strokes of seal script in its Qin-dynasty form. (Zhang Runping)
