Red Light-Green Light
Goal
More braking action is gained by flexing the lower body and widening the wedge so the skis roll onto their inside edges to increase grip.
Helps when a skier tries to stop with stiff legs.
Details
On a gentle slope, skier descends and stops on a command from the instructor. On 'green light', skier lets skis run parallel. On 'red light', skier drops into a wedge and stops. Arms are bent with elbows in front of the torso for balance. Pole baskets are pointed behind.
Variation 1: Work in pairs with the skier at the back calling Green light! Red light!!", and both must adjust their speed.
Variation 2: Green Light! Yellow Light!. On "Yellow Light", skier uses a braking wedge or Half braking wedge to slow and manage speed on straight runs and around corners.
