Pulling a Rope

Goal

Hands move down and back, toward or past the hip, depending on the desired tempo. Elbows break the plane of the back first then hands.

Helps when a skier is too stiff to get leg power.

Details

Ask skiers to imagine there is a rope stretched parallel to the ski tracks. The rope is on a bit of an angle from high in front to lower behind the body.

Demonstrate in slow motion pulling yourself forward using the rope (Poling starts at the hand start position and pulls down and back past the hip). Have them try it.

Once they have the movement in a static position, have them do it while skiing. Start slow then adjust to regular speed.

Variation: change tempo or terrain.
