Think of reaching straight ahead and shaking someone's hand with each stride. Extend the other hand behind the body. This can be done standing in one spot, shifting body weight laterally from one ski to the other, or while skiing down the trail. The instructor may stand at the far end of the trail reaching out to shake hands with the skier to help establish timing.
