Season Summary
At the beginning of the season, the varsity girls' volleyball team came out strong for the Korean Classic Preseason Tournament at KIS on Saturday, August 27! Led by captain Chris Lee, the Lady Guardians swept the competition with three victories and no losses to take home first place and begin this season with a resonating bump-set-kill. On the court for YISS varsity were 11 talented young ladies, most in 9th and 10th grade with much time yet to hone and perfect their skills. The YISS varsity girls' volleyball team both hosted and played in the ACSC tournament from October 18-22. The first two days were a whirlwind of activities: a half-day community service project, PSATs for the sophomore players, and round robin volleyball for all teams. Coming out of pool play, the Lady Guardians ranked 3rd, and they maintained that placement through bracket play to finish the tournament with bronze medals, led by All-Tournament players Christina Lee and Ashley Cho. More admirable, though, is the hospitality the team showed to the visiting schools; their generosity and kindness won them the sportsmanship award and secured friendships with players across Asia. The varsity girls volleyball team entered the KAIAC tournament with the fourth seed, after a season record of 5 wins and 8 losses. Before leaving the tournament, though, they earned the attention and respect of the other 6 teams participating. After beating Humphreys 3-0 in the first round, they went on to face undefeated SFS. The game was a nail-biter, with the Guardians leading in the fifth set only to fall short of the championship game with a score of 14-16. The following day, the team swept Seoul American to secure third place in the tournament, showcasing that the eleven players improved dramatically throughout the season to rise up and challenge these top two teams in the conference. The Lady Guardians ended the evening with several notable awards. Christina Lee was named "all-conference" player, and Yoonjung Chang was awarded "all-tournament." Jungeun Sohn received "Best Passer" of the tournament. And the whole team was recognized with the Sportsmanship Award, with the gym erupting in a cheer of "Let's Go, YISS!" to commemorate it. Good job, Guardians!
