Season Summary
After graduating five talented players, everyone expected the 2015 varsity volleyball season to be a building year. However, just weeks after practices began with seven new team members and four returners, the Guardians took first place in the preseason tournament. Then, to the amazement and uproar of fans and players alike, they beat SFS on their home court-a feat not realized in the recent history of varsity volleyball.
Nearly three months of hard work and devotion culminated in two season-ending tournaments: ACSC in Taiwan and KAIAC in Seoul. At Morrison Academy in Taichung, the team met with teams from around Asia, and enjoyed seeing and making friends from various schools. They placed fourth as a team, while captains Hana Ikeda (all-tournament) and Kasey Kim (best defender) earned individual awards. The following week, the Lady Guardians headed to SAHS for the KAIAC tournament, seeded first because of their untouchable season record. They met longtime rival SFS in the championship game and finished in second place. Individual awards went to the team’s deserving leaders: Hana Ikeda (all-conference, all-tournament), Rosse Han (all-conference, all-tournament), Michelle Kim (all-conference, all-tournament), Kasey Kim (all-conference, best passer).
The 2015 varsity volleyball team exceeded all expectations this season. Instead of a building year, they played hard into one of excellence and success. At the fall sports banquet, four of our players were recognized for their leadership. Hana Ikeda earned the Guardian Award for representing YISS athletics best. Kasey Kim received the Coach’s Award for how facilitated the team’s unity, especially initiating the freshmen to varsity volleyball. Christina Lee won the Spirit Award for her fantastic enthusiasm and encouragement. Rosse Han deserved the MVP for her outstanding hitting, serving, and blocking. Overall, this team demonstrates what amazing goals can be reached even under the unlikeliest of circumstances. They reached beyond expectations and made so many proud: their coaches, their parents, their school, and themselves.
The Lady Guardians went on to have their best season record in history: 19-1. Even with multiple wins, the coaches emphasized hard work and humility, and the co-captains Hana Ikeda and Kasey Kim led by example and encouragement during practices, team events, and game days. The system built around intensity, integrity, and unity guaranteed the team their best possible results with each player’s top skills utilized in a complex strategy.
