Season Summary
The 2023-24 Varsity Girls Basketball season saw several changes from the previous year. Coach Milliken stepped in as the new head coach, and Coach Dwight joined as a new assistant. Thankfully, Coach Hansen agreed to also assist, providing crucial continuity for the program. 7 Varsity returners -- seniors Alexandria Shin (cap) , Karis Lee (cap), Ashley Suh, & Julianna Austin; and juniors Zoe Chung, Avery Sohn & Suoying Wang also provided important experience and leadership to the team. To this group was added JV graduate Claire Lee, newcomers Sarah Pyeon & Grace Kim, and freshmen Eva Huang and Elaine An who shared time with JV.
The girls trained and fought hard, but scoring was not easy to come by, as they rarely scored over 30 per game. However, when playing effective defense, and rebounding well, the girls often held their opponents under 30. As a result, the girls were competitive in many games, even against strong teams. Season averages had the Lady Guardians at 28.3 ppg vs 29.5 for their opponents. The home opener was a case in point, losing a close one to CI. On the flip side, a highlight of the season was on Senior Night when the team earned a close win over 2nd place SIS. Another highlight was finishing ACSC with a dominant 4th quarter to seal a close with a win over SPH. A key goal for next season will be to close out more of those close games.
Stats leaders included Ashley - points, free throw (FT) %; Avery - FTs, steals, assists; Jules - rebounds; Suoying - blocks; Zoe - assist/turnover ratio; Karis - deflections; Eva - 3s; Elaine - shooting %.
