Season Summary
The 2013-2014 boys tennis season was filled with highs and lows. The team lost seven out of ten players coming into the year and was poised for a period of rebuilding. However, with a strong freshman class, improved play from the returning players, and the addition of an upperclassman who outperformed pre-season expectations, the team finished fifth for both the regular season and the KAIAC tournament. Senior (Capt) Jun Lee took fourth place overall for the tournament capping off an amazing six-year career on the varsity squad. Words cannot express how significant his contributions to the team have been.
Heading into the Far East tournament, expectations were equally questionable with only one player returning from last year's division two championship team. After three days of play, the championship came down to a doubles match between perennial rival MC Perry and YISS' Jun Lee/Thomas Kim. Jun and Thomas rose to the occasion, recovering from being down early in the match and pulling out the victory to ensure YISS could do no worse than tie for first place. Jun Lee had the opportunity to pull YISS to an outright lead if he could beat a scrappy singles player from Yokota. Playing perhaps his best tennis of the season, the boys captain dismissed his opponent in definitive fashion solidifying YISS as sole division two champions for back to back years.
Junior Sung Ho Kim and sophomore Wonseuk Her had a difficult draw at Far East and found themselves in the consolation bracket early as a doubles pairing. However, the two played well with their mixed-doubles partners, with Wonseuk making it to the quarter finals of the tournament and Sung Ho to the semis. Strong play from mixed doubles allowed YISS to finish first (boys and girls combined) for division two and third place out of 18 teams when both divisions were combined. The girls team equaled the play of the boys, leaving the tournament with a division two banner for the first time in team history.
