2022-23

Season Summary

YISS Track & Field Girls’ Team was led this year by Senior Captain Anna Fertig and senior newcomer Jisoo Kim. The season began with an exciting 2nd place finish at HHS Meet #1 with many standout performances by our returners and new athletes. 

The second HHS meet on April 6 showed how much the athletes grew as they took podiums in the 400m (Amiah Dodrill, Sophia Banta), High Jump (Anna Fertig), 3200m (Claire Lee), 300m Hurdles (Alice Lee), 4x400m Relay (Alice Lee, Adrianna Chandler, Amiah Dodrill, Lydia Ro), and 4x800m Relay (Veronica Yang, Adrianna Chandler, Erica Kang, Claire Lee). Deborah Pool broke the school Discus record with a throw of 19.10m. 

At the KAIAC Championships Meet on April 15th, the dedicated training paid off with many personal bests and a 3rd place team finish. Sophia Banta broke the school record in the 100m Hurdles. Podium finishers included Lydia Ro (800m), Claire Lee (3200m), Anna Fertig (High Jump), Chloe Kim (High Jump), and our 4x100m Relay team (Anna Fertig, Portia Koo, Lia Gadot, Sophia Banta), 4x400m Relay team (Lydia Ro, Kaiden Holst, Amiah Dodrill, Sophia Banta), and SMR 800m Relay team (Lia Gadot, Anna Fertig, Deborah Pool, Amiah Dodrill). Anna Fertig broke the school record and was KAIAC champion in the High Jump.

The Guardians had another exciting opportunity to return to our ACSC Meet hosted by Morrison Academy in Taiwan. The athletes started things off by participating in a rewarding service project of leading a sports day for special needs students. As the competition began on Friday afternoon, it became clear that the athletes excel in tropical weather. Lia Gadot broke the school record in the Triple Jump and Faith Kim bettered her school record in the Javelin. Other podium finishers included Alice Lee (400m Hurdles), Lydia Ro (800m), Claire Lee (5000m) and Kaiden Holst (5000m). The evening concluded with the SMR 1600 Relay team (Lydia Ro, Amiah Dodrill, Anna Fertig, Sophia Banta) breaking the school record.

Saturday’s competition saw more Guardian success. Kaiden Holst broke the school record in the 1500m. Sophia Banta became ACSC Champion in the 100m Hurdles and the 400m. Our 4x100m Relay team (Anna Fertig, Lia Gadot, Portia Koo, Sophia Banta) also broke the school record with a time of 56.6. Additional Podium finishers included Claire Lee (3000m), Kaiden Holst (3000m), Amiah Dodrill (400m), Alice Lee (100m Hurdles), and the 4x400m Relay team (Claire Lee, Lydia Ro, Sophia Banta, Amiah Dodrill).

The season concluded with our annual tradition of the Staff vs. Student Meet. The YISS athletes had a blast running, throwing, and jumping with their teachers and parents encouraging them. Senior Anna Fertig capped off her season by dominating the individual points tally for the day and improving her school record High Jump performance to 1.46m.
