Season Summary
The varsity boys tennis team had an outstanding 2018 season. The team went into the season with a positive can-do mentality, and willingness to work hard every practice. This attitude soon paid off with a 3-2 victory over SFS at their home courts. This was the first victory over SFS in more than a decade. A victory over SIS also brought the decade long drought to an end. The Guardians found themselves at 9-0, with one match to play in the season against SFS. The team battled hard but ended up losing 2-3. With SFS at 9-1 and YISS at 9-1, the conference champion would be decided by adding up who won the most games against each other, with SFS winning by a mere 6 games. Ryan Ham at 3rd singles, Stephen Sung / Joseph Hwang at 1st doubles, and Daniel Kang / Minjae Kim all finished the regular season in first place. Ian Choi at first singles and David Lee at 2nd singles finished in 3rd place. In the KAIAC final tournament, YISS represented extremely well, reaching 4 of the 5 finals. Daniel Kang and Minjae Kim won the boys second doubles in a closely fought battle with KIS. YISS finished the tournament in 2nd place just 2 points behind SFS. In the Far East tournament in Okinawa, Japan, YISS sent its top 4 boys and 4 girls to compete against other international and DOD schools from around Asia. Under extremely hot conditions, the intense season long training and conditioning paid dividends. Number one singles player Ian Choi had an extremely good tournament, going toe to toe with the best in the region, and finishing in 6th place. Number 2 David Lee had a slow start, but found his rhythm by the end of the tournament finishing a respectable 9th, overpowering the St. Mary’s #2 player in his final match of the tournament. Ian and David also battled to a 6th place finish in boys doubles. Ryan Ham and Erica Cho battled to a 3rd place finish in mixed doubles action, while Ryan and Stephen Sung narrowly missed out on a top ten finish in boys two doubles. When the dust settled and the points were totaled, the boys team finished second in division 1, while YISS came out with the most points for a division one school and won the overall team title for the first time in our school history. Congratulations to all!
