Season Summary
The 18-19 season was challenging but rewarding for the boys. Most of the games were successfully won with the only losses coming during the regular season to SFS and an early friendly loss to SIS. These early losses kick started the aggression and drive of the YISS Guardians. Every game was hard fought and it was evident in practices how much growth the team was achieving, tangibly finishing 2nd in conference. For the first time in YISStory, the boys reached a level where they were able to execute high level plays in games with confidence. The culmination of this ability came through during ACSC in the finals as YISS went head to head with St. Paul in the championship game. Against several Junior National Players, the YISS Guardians fought and came up just short with a 15-13 loss in the 5th set and finishing 2nd. Although heartbreaking, it was an accomplishment that they were proud of and the new level of play they were pushed to. Unfortunately, the let down of ACSC and emotional roller coaster made the losses at KAIAC difficult as the boys felt that they were not able to represent themselves well, finishing 3rd overall. Beyond the court, the team re-learned what it means to be brothers and although struggling at first, it was clear they became a family. Highlights of the season include new records broken by Junior Noah Pak (Season 278 Kills; 83 Aces; as well as the overall record for kills), Senior Kevin Lee being awarded Best Setter - ACSC, and Sophomore Jacob Jeon being awarded Best Blocker - ACSC. Other less tangible highlights include the Choi brothers starting together, underclassmen stepping up to fill some big shoes left by last years seniors, and again, a new level of play that is exciting to watch and dominated other teams. There are some very exciting freshmen coming up and it looks very good for the next few years of boys volleyball. This year was the deepest bench the YISS Boys Volleyball Team has had in a very long time. All in all, it was a great season and although not the highest ranking, definitely worth the challenges.
