Music plays an important role in the total learning experience of a child. At West Hills Christian School, all of our K-6 students participate in General Music classes. Reference to music begins in the book of Genesis. It is a gift created by God and for Him. We see evidence throughout Scripture that music is to be part of worship as well as daily life. The Bible says we should sing “psalms, hymns and spiritual songs” (Eph. 5:19), as well as “a new song” (Psalm 40:3). We worship the God of the past, present and future.
Therefore, music will be presented from a Biblical world-view, relevant to the lives of our students, maintaining ties with our spiritual heritage, giving us inspiration to walk in the Spirit today, and reminding us of the hope we have in Jesus for the future. Psalm 33:3 encourages us to sing and play skillfully. Musical activities will build basic skills in the main elements of music- melody, rhythm, harmony, tone color and form. Music terminology, history, appreciation, performance opportunities, as well as Biblical concepts of praise and worship are woven into music classroom experiences.
