În fiecare an, în 14 februarie, îndrăgostiţii din întreaga lume sărbătoresc Valentine’s Day, cunoscută și sub numele de Ziua Îndrăgostiților. Această sărbătoare, când oamenii trimit aproximativ 150 de milioane de felicitări, este considerată a doua cea mai populară sărbătoare, după Crăciun.

Every year, on February 14th, couples around the world celebrate Valentine's Day, also known as Lovers Day. This holiday, when people send about 150 million greeting cards, is considered the second most popular holiday after Christmas.

Una dintre legende spune că Valentin a fost preot în Roma, în secolele II-III. Acesta, în timpul împăratului Claudius al II-lea (268-270), ar fi ajutat tinerii, creştini sau păgâni, să se căsătorească. Împăratul roman era convins că bărbaţii ar fi soldaţi mult mai buni, dacă nu ar fi avut logodnice sau soţii, de aceea a interzis căsătoriile. Tânărul preot, dimpotrivă, susţinea că mariajul este parte din planul lui Dumnezeu şi unul dintre scopurile acestei vieţi. Astfel, a continuat să îi căsătorească pe tineri în secret, în numele iubirii. În momentul în care secretul său a ajuns la urechile împăratului, acesta a fost închis şi condamnat la moarte, fapt care s-a petrecut la 14 februarie 269. Aceeaşi legendă spune că Valentin, în timp ce se afla la închisoare, s-a îndrăgostit de fiica paznicului. Înainte de a muri, Valentin i-ar fi trimis acesteia o scrisoare, pe care a semnat-o ”De la al tău Valentin”. De aici a rămas obiceiul de a trimite în această zi mesaje de dragoste.

One of the legends says that Valentine was a priest in Rome in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. He, during the reign of Emperor Claudius the 2nd(268-270), would have helped young people, Christians or pagans, to marry.The Roman emperor was convinced that men would be much better soldiers if they would not have fiancées or wives, so he forbade marriages.The young priest, on the contrary, argued that marriage was part of God's plan and one of the purposes of this life. When his secret reached the emperor's ears, he was imprisoned and sentenced to death, which occurred on February 14, 269.The same legend says that Valentine, while in prison, fell in love with the guard's daughter. Before he died, Valentin would have sent her a letter, which he signed "From your Valentine." Hence, there is the custom of sending love messages on this day.
