Numele gladiolei derivă din cuvântul latin "Gladius", însemnând "spadă", numele referindu-se la forma frunzei. "Gladius" este și rădăcina cuvântului gladiator, soldat roman. De aici provine porecla gladiolei, de "Floare a gladiatorului".
The name of the gladiolus derives from the Latin word "Gladius", meaning "sword", the name referring to the shape of the leaf. "Gladius" is also the root of the word gladiator, Roman soldier. Hence the gladiolus' nickname, "Gladiator's Flower".
În trecutul îndepărtat, gladiola era socotită planta victoriei, deoarece era purtată în războaie. Gladiolele își au originea în Africa, Orientul Mijlociu și regiunea mediteraneană. Ca și curiozitate putem menționa faptul că una din cele peste 180 de specii de gladiole, numită "Fecioara ceții", crește exclusiv în preajma cascadei Victoria, de pe râul Zambezi.
In the distant past, gladiolus was considered the plant of victory because it was carried in wars. Gladiolus originates in Africa, the Middle East and the Mediterranean region. As a curiosity we can mention that one of the more than 180 species of gladioli, called the "Virgin of the Fog", grows exclusively around the Victoria Falls, on the Zambezi River.
Sunt mai multe legende despre apariția gladiolei și, mai concret al numelui său deosebit, una dintre ele fiind: Două surori gemene dar extrem de diferite la caracter și-au găsit într-o bună zi sfârșitul. Mama lor, sfâșiată de durere, s-a rugat ca fiicele ei să nu fie luate iar Dumnezeu le-a transformat în flori. Fata ascultătoare a fost preschimbată în crin iar cealaltă în gladiola. De aici venind și pseudonimul gladiolelor de ''crinul-sabie''.
There are several legends about the appearance of gladiolus and, more concretely of its particular name, one of them being: Two twin sisters but extremely different in character found their end one day. Their mother, torn apart by grief, prayed that her daughters would not be taken and God turned them into flowers. The obedient girl was turned into a lily, and the other girl turned into a gladiolus. Hence the nickname of the “sword-lily” gladiolus.
