Because it's still the time of elderflowers, I thought I'd write to you about the legend of the elder tree, which was quite well-known in Bucovina at the beginning of the 20th century.

Numai că, așa cum prorocise vrăjitorul, femeia rămase în scurt timp grea și, după nouă luni, dădu naștere unui băiat, pe care-l numi Iuda. Speriată că spusele vrăjitorului încep să se adeverească, puse băiețelul de doar câteva zile într-un butoi și îi dădu drumul pe râu. Legenda socului ne spune în continuare că butoiul cu Iuda a plutit pe apa curgătoare până a fost zărit de două femei care spălau rufe la râu. Acestea, văzând butoiul, l-au tras la mal și l-au descoperit mirate pe Iuda, scâncind. Întamplarea face că una dintre femei avea un copil de tată, așa că-l luă pe Iuda cu ea acasă și îi hrăni la sân pe amândoi ca pe unul, fără să facă diferențe. Cum făcu și ce făcu Iuda, cum se întoarse el în leagăn într-o noapte, cert e că, dimineață, femeia își găsi copilul mort. Plânse ce plânse, ca orice mamă, dar continuă să-l îngrijească pe Iuda la fel ca înainte.

But, as the wizard had prophesied, the woman soon became pregnant, and after nine months she gave birth to a son, whom he named Judas. Frightened that the wizard's words were beginning to come true, she put the few-days-old baby in a barrel and let him go down the river. The legend of the elder tree tells us that the barrel with Judas floated on the flowing water until it was seen by two women washing clothes in the river. When they saw the barrel, they pulled it to the shore and were amazed to find Judah. Coincidentally, one of the women had another child, so she took Judas home with her and breastfed them both as one, without making any difference. How Judas did and what he did, how he turned in the cradle one night, it is certain that in the morning the woman found her child dead. She wept and wept, like any mother, but she continued to care for Judas just as she had done before.

Așa că Iuda ajunse din nou în pribegie, exact în perioada în care Iisus Christos umbla și el prin lume cu cei unsprezece apostoli. Întâlnindu-l pe Iuda și văzând că e fără căpătâi, Iisus se hotărî să-l ia cu el drept al doisprezecelea apostol. Precum știm, Iuda îl va vinde pe Iisus pentru 30 de arginți. Regretând mai târziu fapta sa și știind că Iisus se va duce după moarte în Iad, ca să se întoarcă de acolo cu toate sufletele, Iuda cumpără o sfoară și alergă degrabă să se spânzure de un soc. Fiind prea subțire, creanga de soc se rupse, iar Iuda căzu. Dându-și seama că nu mai e timp de spânzurătoare, Iuda porni în fugă spre Iad, să intre de viu. Iisus, care deja eliberase sufletele aflate acolo, îl întâlnește pe Iuda pe drum și îl trimite în Iad, unde va rămâne pentru totdeauna.

So Judas went into exile again, just as Jesus Christ was travelling the world with his eleven apostles. When he met Judas and saw that he was helpless, Jesus decided to take him as the twelfth apostle. As we know, Judas will sell Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. Later, regretting his deed and knowing that Jesus would go to Hell after death, to return from there with all the spirits, Judas bought a rope and quickly rushed to hang himself from an elder tree. Being too thin, the elder tree branch broke, and Judas fell on the ground. Realizing that there was no time to hang himself, Judas ran to Hell to enter it alive. Jesus, who had already freed the spirits from there, meets Judas on the way and sends him to Hell, where he will remain forever.
