RO-MD Transnational Educational Project - It is all about legends and a translegendary friendship
"A fost odată ca niciodată... A fost odată un împărat mare și puternic care trăia alături de soția sa într-o țară îmbelșugată, plină de oameni harnici și gospodari. Pe toate le avea împăratul: bani, averi, siguranța țării, bunăstarea oamenilor, era iubit și răsfățat de împărăteasă, dar nu avea copii. Mult s-a mai rugat și a umblat împăratul pe la vraci și vrăjitoare, dar nu vor afla leacul și astfel bunul Dumnezeu le va dărui ceea ce-și doreau cu atâta înflăcărare. În cele din urmă, văzând cât de mult își doresc acest copil, bunul Dumnezeu a trimis un înger în visul împărătesei care i-a spus:
“Once upon a time… there was once a great and powerful emperor who lived with his wife in a rich country, full of hardworking and thrifty people. The emperor had them all: money, wealth, the security of the country, the welfare of the people, he was loved and pampered by the empress, but he had no children. The emperor prayed a lot and then went to the healers and witches, too, but they will not find the cure and so the good God will give them what they wanted so zealously. Finally, seeing how much they wanted this child, the good God sent an angel in the queen’s dream who said to her:
-Împărăteasă, mult ți-ai dorit un copil, și mult ai plâns și te-ai rugat ca Dumnezeu să ți-l dea! Află că rugile ți-au fost ascultate! Dar ia aminte: vei naște o fetiță frumoasă, deșteaptă și iubită de toată lumea care va fi minunea și dragostea soțului tău, împăratul. El, ca tată, va dori să-i împlinească orice dorință, oricât de mică, crezând că dragostea lui poate fi măsurată cu toate cadourile scumpe ce i le poate oferi. Fetița ta va fi însă deosebită: nu va dori nimic și va fi fericită oricât de puțin sau mult îi veți da. Va veni însă o vreme când își va dori ceva ce împăratului îi va fi imposibil să-i dea. Și dacă nu-și va călca pe orgoliu, și nu-i va da, fata ta va muri chiar de mâna tatălui său!
“Empress, you longed for a child, and you cried and prayed that God would give it to you! Know that your players have been heard! But remember: you will give birth to a beautiful smartgirl and loved by everyone, who will be the miracle and love of your husband, the emperor. He, as a father, will want to fulfill any wish, no matter how small, believing that his love can be measured with all the precious gifts he can give her. But your little girl will be special: she will not want anything and she will be happy no matter how little or much you give her. But there will come a time when she will want something that will be impossible for the emperor to give her. And if he will not trample on his pride, and will not give it to her, your daughter will die at the hands of her father!”
Mult a tulburat-o pe împărăteasă acest vis. La câteva zile a aflat că este însărcinată, și amintirea visului s-a pierdut în alte și alte gânduri. Împărăteasa se ocupa acum de alte lucruri: broda hăinuțe, croșeta bonețele și botoșei, ba chiar ea împreună cu împăratul au făcut pătuțul copilului! Vai, împăratul era așa de mândru că toată ziua își săruta împărăteasa spunând:
This dream greatly disturbed the Empress. A few days later she found out she was pregnant, and the memory of the dream was lost among thoughts. The empress took care of other things now: embroidered clothes, crocheted bonnets and boots, and even she and the emperor made the baby’s crib themselves! Alas, the emperor was so proud that he kissed his queen all day long, saying:
-Draga mea, știu că orice față împărătească are nevoie de o suită întreagă de bone să-i crească odrasla. Dar noi vom crește copilașul singuri, îl vom lua cu noi peste tot și nu-l vom scăpa niciodată din ochi! Vedeți, împărăteasa uitase să-i spună și că va fi fată, și că îngerul spusese că vor avea un copil așa de modest și cuminte că nu va vrea nimic.
“My dear, I know that any royal face needs a whole suite of nannies to raise her offspring. But we will raise our baby on our own, we will take it with us everywhere and we will never lose sight of it!” You see, the empress had forgotten to tell him that the baby would be a girl, and that the angel had said that they would have such a modest and good child that she would want nothing.
A venit vremea să nască... Împăratul, când a văzut că are o fetiță, a și uitat că își dorea băiat. I-a pus numele Zambila, pentru că era o fetiță de o delicatețe rară: ochii verzi sclipeau ca două boabe de rouă care se oglindesc în iarba fragedă, pielea îi era catifelată și parfumată iar râsul său cristalin umplea tot palatul.
The time has come to give birth ... The emperor, when he saw that he had a little girl, forgot that he had wanted a boy. She called her Hyacinth, because she was a girl of rare delicacy: her green eyes shone like two dewdrops mirrored in the tender grass, her skin was velvety and fragrant, and her crystalline laughter filled the entire palace.

Au trecut anii. Zambila creștea și se făcea tot mai frumoasă. Alte fete și-ar fi dorit rochii, mătăsuri sau bijuterii. Ea le putea primi pe toate imediat de la tatăl său. Dar niciodată ea n-a spus ce vrea. Uneori, surprins, tatăl său o întreba:
The years have passed. Hyacinth grew and became more and more beautiful. Other girls would have liked dresses, silks or jewelry. She could receive them all immediately from her father. But she never said what she wanted. Her father would sometimes ask her in surprise:
-Zambila, prințesa mea, ești fericită, ai de toate?
- Da, tată, am! venea răspunsul ei însoțit de un pupic pe creștetul bătrânului împărat.
Dar iată că Zambila crescuse destul de mare pentru a se mărita. Împăratul și împărăteasa dădeau baluri în cinstea fiicei lor doar-doar își va găsi vreun prinț. Dar fetei parcă nu-i plăcea nici un băiat.
Într-o seară, pe când împăratul se tot gândea ce prinți să mai invite pentru a-i fi pe plac fiicei sale, Zambila veni la el și zise:
“Hyacinth, my princess, are you happy, do you have everything?”
“Yes, father, I do!” her answer came with a kiss on the old emperor's forehead.
But behold, Hyacinth had grown old enough to get married. The emperor and the empress were organising balls in honour of their daughter — only she would find a prince. But the girl didn't seem to like any boys.
Într-o seară, pe când împăratul se tot gândea ce prinți să mai invite pentru a-i fi pe plac fiicei sale, Zambila veni la el și zise:
-Tată, știu că vrei să mă căsătoresc! Ei află, că eu deja iubesc pe cineva și, de vei accepta acest lucru, vom fi cu toții fericiți.
One evening, while the emperor was still thinking of what other princes to invite to please his daughter, Hyacinth came to him and said:
“Father, I know you want me to get married! But know that I already love someone and, if you accept this, we will all be happy.”
Împăratul își ascultă fiica. Era curios să afle despre cine este vorba... Vreun prinț, vreun fiu de boier de rang înalt?
-Nu, tată, este fiul grădinarului!
-Cum? Fiul grădinarului? Nu se poate! Te-a vrăjit cu leacuri necurate!
The emperor listened to his daughter. He was curious to know who it was ... A prince, a son of a high-ranking boyar?
“No, father, he's the gardener's son!”
“What? The gardener's son? It's not possible! He enchanted you with shady herbs!”
-Tată, nu ți-am cerut niciodată nimic, dar acum îți cer să mă lași să-mi împlinesc menirea!
-Vai, vai, dar cum, fiica mea?! Vor râde toți!!!!
Mânios, împăratul porni în grădină. Acolo, fiul grădinarului tocmai se îngrijea de câțiva trandafiri. Împăratul, mânios, scoase sabia să-l ucidă. Zambila a fost însă mai iute: și-a pus drept scut fragedul său trup din dorința de a-și salva iubitul.
Fata a murit... În locul unde sângele ei a picurat pe pământ au ieșit primele flori pe care toți le-au numit zambile."
“Father, I never asked you for anything, but now please let me follow my destiny!”
“Alas, alas, but how, my dear daughter?! Everyone will laugh !!!!”
Filled with anger, the emperor set off to the garden. There, the gardener's son was just taking care of a few roses. The emperor, furious, drew his sword to kill him. But the Hyacinth was faster: she put her fragile body like a shield out of the desire to save her lover.
The girl died ... In the place where her blood dripped on the ground, the first flowers came out, which everyone called hyacinths.”
