La sfârşitul lunii iunie, pe marginea drumurilor, printre alte buruieni neînsemnate la prima vedere, apar ciulinii. Cu capetele lor ciufulite, spinoase, aceste plante parcă încearcă să-şi camufleze calităţile terapeutice deosebite, recunoscute, de altfel, din cele mai vechi timpuri.
Forgotten medicinal plants
At the end of June, on the side of the roads, among other insignificant weeds at first sight, thistles appear. With their heads ruffled, thorned, it’s like these plants try to camouflage their special therapeutic qualities, recognized, by the way, ever since the oldest times.
Faimosul medic şi cercetător al tainelor naturii, Avicenna, recomanda mărăcinele ca pe un excelent hemostatic şi anestezic, iar vracii în Evului Mediu îl întrebuințau ca leac pentru bolile sistemului nervos şi ale celui digestiv. În medicina modernă, ciulinul este prescris în combaterea tuberculozei pulmonare, în tratarea problemelor digestive, a hemoroizilor şi a afecţiunilor ginecologice.
The famous doctor and researcher of the mysteries of nature, Avicenna, recommended thistle as an excellent hemostatic and anaesthetic, and the healers in the Middle Ages used it as a cure for the diseases of the nervous system and the digestive tract. In the modern medicine, the thistle is prescribed in combating pulmonary tuberculosis, in treating digestive problems, hemorrhoids and gynecological diseases.
O istorie spinoasă - legenda ciulinului
În timpuri străvechi, ciulinii erau folosiţi în ritualurile magice, ca mijloc de alungare a duhurilor şi spiritelor rele. Secole mai târziu, ţăranii foloseau ciulini aprinşi pentru dezinfectarea prin afumare a grajdurilor, prevenind în acest fel îmbolnăvirea animalelor domestice, iar cenuşa rămasă o foloseau ca îngrăşământ în grădină. În ciuda aspectului său neprietenos, în China, mărăcinele este simbolul puterii şi al longevităţii, iar în Scoţia, este reprezentat pe stema naţională.
A Thorny history - the Legend of the Thistle
In ancient times, thistles were used in magical rituals as a means of driving away evil ghosts and spirits. Centuries later, the peasants used burning thistles to disinfect the stables by smoking, thus preventing the disease of domestic animals, and the remaining ashes were used as fertilizer in the garden. Despite its unfriendly appearance, in China, the is a symbol of power and longevity, and in Scotland, it is represented on the national coat of arms.
Legenda spune că în secolul al IX-lea, când vikingii, temuţii stăpâni ai mărilor nordice, au atacat Scoţia, ciulinul, o banală buruiană, a fost planta care i-a salvat pe localnici. Se povesteşte că o iscoadă din rândurile vikingilor a fost trimisă în picioarele goale spre a se infiltra în taină printre ostaşii scoţieni. În întunericul nopţii, spre ghinionul lui, spionul a călcat pe un ciulin ţepos şi a slobozit un ţipăt de durere.
Legend has it that in the ninth century, when the Vikings, the feared masters of the northern seas, attacked Scotland, the thistle, a common weed, was the plant that saved the locals. It is said that a spy from the Vikings was sent barefoot to infiltrate the Scottish soldiers in secret. In the darkness of the night, to his misfortune, the spy stepped on a thorny thistle and let out a scream of pain.

Luptătorii scoţieni, alertându-se, au pornit un atac fulgerător asupra vikingilor, pe care i-au surprins total nepregătiţi, reuşind astfel să îi învingă. Câteva secole mai târziu, în 1687, regele Scoţiei, Iacob al VII-lea, instituia, în semn de veneraţie pentru această plantă, "Ordinul Ciulinului", cel mai important ordin cavaleresc din Scoţia.
The Scottish fighters, alerting themselves, launched a horrific sudden attack on the Vikings, which they caught completely unprepared, thus managing to defeat them. A few centuries later, in 1687, the King of Scotland, James VII, instituted, as a sign of veneration for this plant, the "Order of the Thistle", the most important knightly order in Scotland.
Deviza acestui ordin glăsuieşte: "Nimeni nu mă poate provoca fără să fie pedepsit" ("Nemo me impune lacessit"). Dar, dincolo de legende şi superstiţii, încă din Antichitate, în mai toate colţurile lumii, ciulinul a fost recunoscut ca plantă medicinală cu proprietăţi terapeutice deosebite.
The motto of this order reads: "No one can harm me unpunished" ("Nemo imposes us lacessit"). But, beyond legends and superstitions, ever since antiquity, in almost every corner of the world, the thistle has been recognized as a medicinal plant with special therapeutic properties.
Vechile tratate de medicină consemnează că grecii antici foloseau decoctul din ciulini împotriva bolilor respiratorii şi că romanii utilizau seva plantei în tratarea afecţiunilor hepatice. Vracii popoarelor slave recomandau extrasele din ciulini împotriva hemoroizilor şi a rănilor ulceroase, iar călugării tibetani preparau din plantă remedii împotriva tumorilor maligne şi chiar a cancerului de piele.
The ancient medical treatises record that the ancient Greeks used the thistle decoction against respiratory diseases and that the Romans used the sap of the plant in the treatment of liver diseases. The healers of the Slavic peoples recommended extracts from thistles against hemorrhoids and ulcerative wounds, and Tibetan monks prepared herbal remedies against malignant tumors and even skin cancer.
