În Japonia, camelia, numită „Tsubaki”, este cunoscută drept floarea care aduce primăvara. In Japan, camellia, named “Tsubaki”, is known as a flower that announces the spring season. A Japanese legend talks about a bush with camellia flowers that walks about at night in the garden of a samurai from Matsue. These strange and disturbing walks became so frequent that the master of the garden commanded that this bush be cut down. When this happened, a stream of blood gushed from the severed trunk of the camellia.
O altă legendă spune că trăia odată o fiică de împărat deosebit de frumoasă, dar deosebit de singură, pe nume Camelia. Another legend says that once lived an emperor’s daughter who was extremely beautiful, but she felt very lonely. Her name was Camellia. To fill her time, she spent most of it talking to the flowers and learning their language. In the kingdom ruled by the girl’s father lived a dragon that used to eat all 14-year-old girls. The closer she got to the age of 14, the better she was guarded and the more worried her parents were. Although she was being guarded by the most skilled soldiers, at 12 o’clock at night when the girl turned 14, the dragon managed to enter the castle, in the tower where she had been locked up, and to kidnap her, taking her away to eat her.

On the way to the place where the dragon lived, Camellia begged the flowers from the flowery meadows over which she was passing to turn her into a flower and save her. The flowers fulfilled her wish and turned her into a very fine pink flower, which the dragon lost from its claws and which, as it touched the ground, took root, giving birth to new flowers of the most varied colours and shapes. This flower was to be called Camellia.
