RO-MD Transnational Educational Project - It is all about legends and a translegendary friendship
Era odată un voievod pe nume Dragoş, care trăia în acea parte din România care se numeşte Maramureş. Era bun gospodar şi cârmuitor dibaci, dar şi meşter vânător. Îi plăcea tare mult să vâneze zimbri, urşi, cerbi, căprioare, mistreţi şi lupi.
Once upon a time, there was a prince called Dragoș, who lived in that part of Romania named Maramureș. He was a good householder, a skilled ruler and also a good hunter. He loved hunting bisons, bears, deer, boars, and wolves.
Legenda spune că, umblând el la vânătoare, a auzit că fraţii lui, românii de la răsărit de munţii Carpaţi, de pe valea râurilor Siret şi Prut, sufereau mult din pricină ca-i jefuiau şi-i ucideau tătarii. Aceştia erau pe atunci, un neam de oameni care trăiau numai din războaie şi din ceea ce luau de la alţii. Se ştia că nu-i întrecea nimeni la călărie. Năvăleau pe cai iuţi ca vântul. Loveau cu nişte săbii curbate numite iatagane, iar săgeţile repezite din arcurile lor ţâşneau ca gândul şi nimereau drept în ţintă. Pe cap purtau căciuli mari, din blană de oaie, iar de apărat se apărau cu scuturi rotunde din fier. Conducătorul tătarilor se numea han sau han-tătar.
Legend has it that, as he was hunting, he heard that his brothers, Romanian people on the eastern side of the Carpathian Mountains, on the valley of the rivers Siret and Prut, were suffering because the Tatars were robbing and killing them. The last ones were, at that time, some folks living on wars and on what they took from other people. Everyone knew that they were the best at riding. They used to dash everywhere on horses as fast as the wind. They used to hit with some curved swords named iatagans, and the arrows launched from their bows darted as fast as a thought hitting the target straight away. They used to wear big wooly caps on their heads and, to defend themselves, they used round iron shields. Their ruler was named han or han Tatar.
Cu vitejii lui din Maramureş, Dragoş a trecut munţii la răsărit, ca să-i ajute în lupta cu tătarii. Prin munţi, în calea lui Dragoş şi a vitejilor săi, a ieşit un bour sau zimbru, mai mare ca un taur, cu coarne ţepoase, cu grumaz gros, cu copite tari, cu păr lung negru, cu ochi holbaţi, fioroşi, cu nări largi.
With his brave people from Maramureș, Dragoș crossed the mountains to the East, in order to help the local people fight the Tatars. In the mountains, a bison showed up in front of Dragoș and his warriors, bigger than a bull, with sharp horns, a thick neck, hard hooves, long black hair, fierceful staring eyes, and wide nostrils.
Întâi l-a simţit căţelandra lui Dragoş, numită Molda. Şi, simţindu-l, a alergat după el, lătrând ascuţit. Dar oricât de fioros era acel bour, Dragoş tot l-a ochit cu săgeata şi l-a înţepat cu suliţă. Rănită, plină de sânge, acea fiară a mai fugit încă mult prin pădurea cu arbori înalţi. Ba, a trecut şi un râu cu apă mare; Molda, după dânsa, gonea, gonea din răsputeri s-o prindă. Dar râul fiind adânc şi valurile lui repezi, biata căţelandră Molda s-a înecat.

Dragoș’s female dog, Molda, was the first to smell it. She chased him, barking in a pitched voice. But, no matter how fierce that bison was, Dragoș took aim at it with his arrow and stung it with a spear. Wounded, covered with blood, that beast kept running through the wood with tall trees. Even more, it crossed a river with deep waters. Molda was chasing it, trying hard to catch it. But, as the river being deep and its waves fast, poor Molda dog drowned herself.

Călări, Dragoş cu vitejii lui au trecut râul, au lovit zimbrul drept între coarne şi, în sfârşit, l-au doborât. Foarte mult s-a bucurat Dragoş de această biruinţă, dar mult i-a părut rău de pierderea căţelandrei. În amintirea ei a numit acel râu Moldova.
On horseback, Dragoș and his brave people crossed the river, hit the bison straight between its horns and they finally killed it. Dragoș was happy for this victory, but he deeply deplored the loss of his female dog. In her memory, he called that river Moldavia.
Apoi, Dragoş a trecut încă mai departe şi i-a ajutat pe românii din această parte a ţării să-i alunge pe tătarii cel răufăcători. Când s-a întors din luptă, biruitor, românii l-au ales voievod şi l-au poftit să conducă această parte din ţară, pe care au numit-o tot Moldova, de la numele râului.
Then Dragoș kept riding and helped Romanian people in this part of the country chase the evil Tatars away. As he came back victorious from war, the Romanian people elected him as their prince and asked him to rule this part of the country, which they also called Moldavia, after the name of the river.
