În tradiția noastră populară busuiocul este o plantă aducătoare de fericire, înzestrată cu puteri magice. Busuioc se pune în prima baie a copilului ca să fie mai atrăgător, mai ales dacă este fată.
In our popular tradition, basil is a plant that brings happiness, endowed with magical powers. Basil is placed in the child's first bath to make them more attractive, especially if it is a girl.
Termenul de busuioc vine din limba greacă (basileus) care înseamnă rege și se spune că a crescut pe locul unde Împărații Constantin și Elena au descoperit Sfânta Cruce. Se spune că busuiocul a crescut pe Crucea Domnului Hristos. După ce Domnul a fost dat jos, Crucea a căzut şi, cu vremea, a acoperit-o pământul. Mergând să caute crucea, Sfânta Împărăteasă Elena a simțit un miros plăcut, adus de vânt. S-a luat după el și a găsit busuiocul, a smuls câteva fire, să le răsădească în grădină, și l-a găsit cu rădăcinile înfipte în Cruce.
The term basil comes from the Greek basileus which means king and is said to have grown on the site where the Emperors Constantine and Helen discovered the Holy Cross. It is said that the basil grew on the Christ’s Cross. After the Lord was removed, the Cross fell and, in time, the earth covered it. Going to look for the cross, the Holy Empress Elena felt a pleasant smell brought by the wind. She followed it and found the basil, plucked a few twigs to plant them in her garden and found them with their roots stuck into the cross.

That is why, it is said, the branches of the basil grow in the shape of a cross. Legend has it that, at the birth of the Saviour, people brought basil with them and covered the baby. From that time the basil would have entered the church and is used in the ritual of sanctifying the holy water.
De asemenea, busuiocul se pune la icoane, pentru a atrage protecția divină asupra casei și ocupanților săi. În India străveche busuiocul era simbol al ospitalității. Basil is also placed on icons to attract divine protection to the house and its occupants. In ancient India, basil was a symbol of hospitality. In Egypt it was used in the ritual of embalming mummies. In Italy the basil is the symbol of love, it is said that its smell drives men crazy.
Dincolo de dimensiunea spiritual și magică, busuiocul mai are o calitate important – aceea de plantă vindecătoare, frunzele acestei plante sunt un excepțional tonic pentru sistemul nervos și contribuie la întărirea memoriei.
Beyond the spiritual and magical dimension, basil also has an important quality - that of a healing plant, the leaves of this plant are an exceptional tonic for the nervous system and help strengthen memory.
