James W. Haverkamp

May 10, 1937 - July 19, 2014

James W. Haverkamp, 77, of Terre Haute, passed away on Saturday, July 19, 2014, at Union Hospital. He was born on May 10, 1937, in Brazil, to the late William H. Haverkamp and Annabelle (Campbell) Haverkamp. He married Catherine Champer on Dec. 21, 1958.

James graduated from ISU with his bachelor’s degree in 1959 and his master’s degree in 1962. He taught Industrial Technology for 33 years at North Vermillion High School. James was an active member of the Newport Lions Club for almost 47 years. He was very involved with the Newport Hillclimb. His was the voice that was heard year after year, announcing the cars and drivers that raced up the hill. He loved antique cars and spent much of his spare time restoring them and making street rods. He was a member of the Newport United Methodist Church for over 51 years. He was a NASCAR fan and his favorite driver was Carl Edwards. James loved the outdoors, especially gardening and bird watching. Most of all, James cherished the time he spent with his family and friends.

James is survived by his wife, Catherine Haverkamp of Terre Haute; daughters, Janeane Curley and her husband Daniel of Terre Haute and Amy Phillips and her husband Carl of Rossville, Ill.; grandchildren, Hanna, Connor, and Layne Curley of Terre Haute, Kelli (Phillips) Denny and her husband Amos of Plainfield, and Kenneth Phillips of Rossville; a brother. Thomas Haverkamp and his wife Sharon of Rockville; and many friends.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at Mattox-Wood Funeral Home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at the funeral home, with Pastor John Overby officiating. Burial will follow in Clearview Cemetery in Brazil. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Coleman Cancer Center Foundation/Providence Medical Group - Dr.Huh.
