John S. Jenkins

February 2, 1924 - July 6, 2013

MAITLAND, Fla. — John S. Jenkins, 89, of Maitland and formerly of Cayuga, Ind., passed away at 8:15 a.m. EDT Saturday, July 6, 2013, at Savannah Cove Nursing Home in Maitland.

He was born Feb. 2, 1924, in Terre Haute, Ind., the son of the late Jesse L. and Georgia West Jenkins.

He married Doris G. Elliott on June 8, 1947, in Cayuga, Ind. She survives.

Other survivors include one daughter, Iris (Vern) Cutshall of Orlando, Fla.; son-in-law, Lester Burch of Lafayette, Ind.; two grandchildren, Sarah (Mark) Griffin of Denver, Colo., and Samuel Cutshall of Orlando, Fla.; one great-grandson, Hunter James Griffin of Denver, Colo.; and one sister, Katherine Goldman of Cape Coral, Fla.

John was preceded in death by his daughter, Rose M. Burch; and one brother, Haldon Jenkins.

John owned and operated Jenkins’ Concrete in Cayuga from 1955 through 1974. He then worked at Inland Container as a waste clerk, retiring in 1986. John and his wife, Doris, also formerly owned and operated Jenkins’ Sundries in Cayuga. John also had a small caning business that he operated from his home.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Army. John was a 1942 graduate of Cayuga High School. He was a member of the Cayuga Presbyterian Church. John enjoyed flea markets, antiquing and wintering in Florida.

John Jenkins served as one of the original members of the North Vermillion School Board.

Funeral services: 11 a.m. EDT Friday, July 12, at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Ind. Officiating: the Rev. Hana Elliott. Burial: Thomas Cemetery, Newport, Ind. Visitation: 5-8 p.m. EDT Thursday, July 11, at the funeral home.
