CAYUGA, Ind. - Kayla Nicole Hughes, 16, of Cayuga, Ind., (Eugene) passed away at 10:30 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 24, 2003) south of Covington Ind., from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was born Sept. 15, 1986, in Danville, Ill., the daughter of Stephen Hughes and Becky Switzer. Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Becky (Brent) Shaw of Cayuga, Ind.; her father and stepmother, Steve (Angie) Hughes in Tennessee; her big sissy, Brandi Hughes of Cayuga, Ind.; her little sisters, Andrea and Meghan Hughes, both in Tennessee; maternal grandparents, Frank (Minnie) Switzer of Cayuga; paternal grandparents, George (Shirley) Hughes of Westville, Ill.; stepgrandparents, Carol Shaw of Westville and Ed (Pat) Scheiman of Lilburn, Ga.; stepgreat-grandfather, Joe Nichols of Westville; uncles and aunts, Bill Whittington of Hillsboro, Ind., Violet Sterling, Jim (Mary Ann) Hughes and Mike (Michelle) Hughes, all of Westville, John Hughes of Perrysville, Ind., Bruce (Kathi) Shaw of Kokomo, Ind., Ruth Crowder Laycock of Cayuga; cousins, Gene (Iris) Martin of Catlin, Ill., Erica (Phil) Sams, Jake and Jon, all of Lodi, Ind., Karla (Damon) Smith, Krista and Shelby, all of Georgetown, Ill., Robey, Erin, Chris, Brian and Kaylee Hughes, all of Westville and two very special little friends, Tootsie and Baby Ella, whom Kayla adored and loved very much. Kayla is preceded in death by Grandpa Buck Switzer, great-grandmas, Helen Ottinger, Olive Switzer, Louise Bann and Helen Nicolas; special aunt, Goldie Collom and special uncle, Herb Sterling.

Kayla was a junior at North Vermillion High School where she was very active in sports. She was a member of the Who's Who of American High School Students. She attended the Cayuga Christian Church and was a member of the Cayuga American Legion Auxiliary Girls Rainbow Post #263. Kayla enjoyed helping autistic children. She was loving and helpful to others and always wore a smile.

Funeral services: 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28 at the Cayuga Christian Church, 406 South Logan St., Cayuga; Officiating: Rev. Andy Spencer; Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27 at the church; Burial: Thomas Cemetery in Newport, Ind.; Memorials may be made to the Cayuga Christian Church Youth Center, P.O.
