John ‘Marvin’ Buck

Brazil — John “Marvin” Buck, 74, of Brazil, passed away on Sept. 23, 2012. Marvin was born April 15, 1938, the son of Alvin and Irene Buck. He was a part of the Brazil High School graduating class of 1956. Following high school, he furthered his education at Indiana State University where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Education. After his schooling, he married Sandy Spence on Nov. 11, 1961. Marvin taught school and coached for 33 years. He retired from teaching at Newport Elementary. In addition to teaching, he held many other positions including Club Pro at Phoenix Country Club in Terre Haute and Parke County Golf Course.

In his free time, he enjoyed being a referee of football, basketball, volleyball, baseball and girls softball, where he retired after 50 years of service. Marvin enjoyed playing golf, where he has many accomplishments in the sport, including multiple Parke County Club Championships. He took tremendous pride in his grandchildren and all of their accomplishments and activities.

Marvin was very active in the YMCA of Clay County, where he was a past board member and a member of the Silver Sneakers Program. He was a former chairman of the Republican Party in Parke County, and past EMS Director of Parke County. He was a founding member of the Rockville Elks Lodge 2471. He served in many state and national positions, including Lodge Exalted Ruler, State Hoop Shoot Chairman, Past State President, Grand Trustee and Special Deputy. Marvin worked effortlessly at raising awareness and funds towards the Indiana Elks Cancer Research Project.

He is preceded in death by an infant daughter, Rhea Kay Buck, his parents, and brother, Morris Buck. Marvin is survived by his wife, Sandy Buck of Brazil; sons, Ted Buck (Sheryle) of Louisville, Ky., and Tony Buck (Denise) of Brazil. Grandchildren; Chelsea and Kandice (Louisville), Ashlen and Clayton (Brazil). Brother Bill Buck and sister Norma Ruddock of Brazil.

Service will be Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, at 6:30 p.m. at Clay County YMCA. Visitation will be from 3:30 p.m. until time of service. Cremation will take place at a later date.
