Richard E. Lewis, Jr. of Cayuga passed away on December 20, 2023 at Union Hospital in Terre Haute. He was born in Clinton on October 9, 1959 to parents Helen and Richard Lewis, Sr. Rick attended North Vermillion High School and graduated with the Class of ’78.

Known to many in the community as “Uncle Rick”, Richard had a true servant’s heart and had a deep passion for Cayuga and its community. He served not only as a Town Board member, but also on the Park Board. He was a founding member and the driving force behind the Fun Days and Derby in Cayuga while his health permitted. He held a position as a Cayuga Reserve Deputy Marshall for several years, a Reserve for the Cayuga Fire Department for 43 years, and was a Vermillion County EMT for over 25 years. He was awarded Fireman of the Year multiple times throughout his volunteer history.

Rick took a custodial position at North Vermillion High School and also drove a bus route as needed. He absolutely loved working with children and was known for having a good time and goofing around. He looked forward to the years he was asked to be Santa Claus.

Rick attended the Cayuga Church of the Nazarene but could be found cleaning the Presbyterian Church in his spare time. A true jack-of-all-trades, he enjoyed lawncare and would mow multiple lawns in the area as well. One of his favorite pastimes was watching wrestling, a joy he shared with his great nephew.

Rick is survived by his wife of over 41 years, Darlene. He is also survived by his brothers Roger (Tonya) Lewis and William (Ann) Lewis; brother-in-law Jim (Viv) Dudley, and his chosen brother Greg Ratliff. He leaves behind his nieces and nephews Sarah, Shelby, Billy, Amanda, David, Josh, Heather, Staci, Heather, Cole, and Dane; and many dear great nieces and great nephews, including Brantley, Eli, and Evelyn, whom he enjoyed spending time with every chance he got. Also surviving is Isaac Craft, who he equally adored. Rick is preceded in death by his parents Richard and Helen Lewis; his parents-in-law Doris and Willis Swem; and his loyal companion, Max.

A visitation will be held from 11 am – 2 pm EST on Saturday, December 23, 2023 at the Cayuga Church of the Nazarene, located at 205 E. Thompson St., in Cayuga. A funeral service celebrating his life will follow on Saturday at 2 pm. Pastor Sam Moore will be officiating. He will be laid to rest at Thomas Cemetery following the services.
