Cathryn H. Peverly

Cathryn H. Peverly, 95, of Danville, died at 4:58 p.m. Thursday, March 18, 2010, at the Hawthorne Inn.

She was born Jan. 11, 1915, near Perrysvile, Ind., the daughter of John H. and Coral L. Johnson Hughes.

She was a graduate of Sullivan (Ill.) High School, University of Illinois and received her master’s degree from Indiana State University. She moved from Decatur, Ill., to Perrysville, Ind., in 1938, and moved from the farm to Danville in 1999.

Cathryn was a high school teacher at Perrysville and North Vermillion for 17 years, retiring in 1973. Her memberships include St. James United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Delta Kappa Gamma, Indiana State Retired Teachers Association and AARP.

She was a 4-H Club leader for many years, and was a former member of Vermillion County Library Board.

She served as a Red Cross volunteer at St. Elizabeth Hospital and at USMC Sager Campus from 1974 to 1993.

Cathryn married Ralph B. Peverly on July 11, 1936, at Pontiac, Ill. He died Nov. 13, 1994.

Surviving are four children, Patricia (Charles) Despain of Kelseyville, Calif., Martha (Dr. David) Berckmueller of Milan, Ohio, John H. (Charlotte) Peverly of Perrysville and Jane A. (Robert) Andrews of Danville; two brothers, Wayne A. Hughes of Pontiac, Ill., and James E. (Suzanne) Hughes of Eagle River, Wis.; a brother-in-law, Robert C. (Ruth) Peverly of Clinton, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Her parents; a granddaughter, Melissa Peverly; and sister-in-law, Mary W. Hughes, preceded her in death.

A celebration of Cathryn’s life will be at 11 a.m. CDT Wednesday March 24, at St. James United Methodist Church, with Rev. Ken Cox officiating. Burial will follow in Hicks Cemetery, Perrysville, Ind. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. EDT Tuesday at Shelby Funeral Home, Covington, Ind., and one hour before services at St. James on Wednesday. Memorials requested to Perrysville United Methodist Church or St. James Habitat Building Fund with envelopes available at Shelby Funeral Home.
