Donald Eugene Newlin

March 3, 1924 - July 7, 2008

CAYUGA, Ind. — Donald Eugene Newlin, 84, of Cayuga, passed this earthly existence at 10:15 p.m. Monday, July 7, 2008, at the Veterans Affairs Illiana Health Care System in Danville. Born March 3, 1924, in Georgetown, to Clayton and Nelle (Lemon) Newlin.

Don helped on the farm, worked at Beanie Biggs’ gas station, was a 1942 graduate of Georgetown High School, then went off to Europe to fight for our freedom.

After his return from the War, he married Dorothy Lee Cherry Nov. 30, 1945, in Pocahontas, Ark., and had two children, Donna Lee and David Jay Newlin. Don farmed near Dana, Ind., all his life, retired from Tee Pak in Danville and spent several years as a bus driver for the North Vermillion School Corporation.

He was a lifelong member of Elwood Friends Meeting where he learned to love the Lord and gained the strong faith that followed him through his life. His hobbies included: woodworking, antiques, collecting things, practical joking and spreading joy wherever he went.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Dorothy; his brother, Bennett Haworth Newlin; and his sister-in-law, Ann (Gloss) Newlin. Don is survived by: his daughter and son-in-law, Donna Lee and Jon Farthing of Cayuga, Ind.; his son and daughter-in-law, David Jay and Carla (Rogers) Newlin of Georgetown; and two grandchildren, Krista Lee and Katie Ann Farthing. Also surviving are Don’s three nephews, Greg, Jeff and Clay Newlin, as well as one niece, Annette Hoskins. Don and Dorothy had a special friend, Doris Arrasmith,

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorials to Elwood Friends Meeting or to the VA Illiana Health Care System of Danville. A celebration of Don’s life will be held at 11 a.m. CDT Friday, July 11, 2008, at Sunset’s Houghton-Leasure Funeral Home, 200 E. West St. in Georgetown. Garry Hendrick will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. CDT Thursday, July 10 at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in Elwood Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sunsetfuneralhome.com.
