Stephens, Loren Max

Loren Max Stephens, a native of Hymera in Sullivan County, Indiana, graduated from Indiana State Teachers College, was a Navy Veteran and held several school positions throughout the Wabash Valley. Stephens earned his BS of Education in 1938 and received his MS degree in 1941.

He served as principal at Hymera High School, the same school he graduated from in 1934. He was principal at Hymera for the periods of 1942-43 and 1947-56. He was assistant principal at Attica, Indiana during 1941 and 1942. He was also principal and basketball coach at Hillsdale High School in 1946-47 after serving his country in the Navy from 1942-46. Stephens was superintendent of Hutsonville, Illinois community schools from 1956-59. In 1959, he accepted the position of superintendent of Brazil city schools. In 1962, he became the mathematics professor at Indiana State College. Mr. Stephens was superintendent of North Vermillion High School from 1965-1968. In 1968 Clifton Warner became the superintendent.

Stephens entered the Navy in 1942, made ensign in 1943 and was promoted to Lt jg in February 1945. He left the Navy to return to his teaching career in July 1946.

Loren Max Stephens and Hazel Pierce of Wilford, Indiana married in 1941. Mr and Mrs. Stephens were blessed with a daughter, Janice Ruth and a son, John I Stephens.

Stephens passed March 1, 1991 at the age of 76 and is buried at Westlawn Cemetery, Farmersburg, Indiana.
