Word Origin
volume (n.)
late 14c., "roll of parchment containing writing; a bound book," from Old French volume "scroll, book; work, volume; girth, size" (13c.) and directly from Latin volumen (genitive voluminis) "roll (of a manuscript); coil, wreath," literally "that which is rolled," from volvere "to turn around, roll" (see volvox). Meaning "book forming part of a set" is 1520s in English, from that sense in French. Generalized sense of "bulk, mass, quantity" (1620s) developed from that of "bulk or size of a book" (1520s), again following the sense evolution in the French word.

Why sound control in television or computer etc is called volume?
A: the term "Volume" was first applied to audio level controls because it meant the control had a logarithmic effect rather than linear. this means that the sound level tapers evenly as you fade it. a linear control would reduce the apparent loudness quite quickly, making most of the rotation useless. the need for non-linear adjustment of sound level goes back to the era before hearing was well understood, as the effect was attributed to the room having a volume (3 dimensional) space, so that sound power needed adjustment related to the cube of distance dimensions. however now we know that it is not the size of the room, you get the same identical effect when listening with earphones. it is how the ear works when it perceives sound. starting with high fidelity in the 1950's the "volume" control for sound amplifiers was changed to "loudness". It worked similar to volume except it boosted the bass and treble as you lowered the sound level. This is because the range of hearing of the ear is less at low levels, but with loudness compensation you can enjoy the full range of loud music when listening at a more modest level.
