We went back to Evesham today and conducted yet another run-through of the events that must have followed the killing of Christopher Wellesley; trying to put ourselves in the place of the murderer, in order to work out how they got away afterwards and where they might have gone. It didn't get us anywhere! We've probably narrowed it down to two suspects - assuming that we can rule out Vanessa's parents, because they would surely have admitted it by now rather than allow her to be convicted. But, to be honest, there's no evidence to prove that either one of them actually did kill him - no incriminating fingermarks, no footprints or DNA left behind at the scene. And, even if we could get a search warrant for their homes, the chances of finding droplets of blood on their clothing after all this time are vanishingly small. I'm beginning to think that Christabel is right, and the best we can hope for is "reasonable doubt".
