Statement by Mr Mark Sanders, student at Oriel College, taken by DC Andrew Lepage
I was out running with my friend Thomas Caldwell. We had been running for, approximately twenty minutes when we saw a woman walking along the path ahead of us. She was walking quite slowly down the middle of the path, but meandering a bit from side to side. I remember wondering if we might find it difficult to get past her. The, all of a sudden, she fell over. Then I noticed a man sitting on a bench by the side of the path. I found out afterwards – when he was arrested – that his name was Lambert. He sort of pitched forward on top of the woman. We ran faster to get to her to help. The man must have seen us coming because he got up and ran off. So we chased him and caught him and brought him back. We handed him over to the police, who arrested him. We hung around for a while and then the police asked us to come down and make a statement about what we saw.
