I’m waiting for “Bernie” to come down to breakfast before I can get off. I should have thought about that last might and told her where everything was so that I wouldn’t be kept waiting in the morning. I’m not used to having guests in the house.

I suppose she’s tired after the excitement of yesterday – and she had a disturbed night too. Two or three times, I was woken up by her shouting out in her sleep – nightmares it must have been. I went round and looked in on her to check she was alright, but I didn’t like to go in, in case she woke up and thought I was up to no good. I know I shouldn’t, but I can’t help feeling pleased that she isn’t as cool and unaffected by everything as she likes to make out.

p.m.

Who would have thought it! “Bernie” turns out to be much more domesticated than I expected.

I completely forgot about her while I was out and, as I drove home, it suddenly occurred to me that I would have to get some sort of meal for her when I got back. I never imagined for a moment that she would cook for us both. It didn’t fit in at all with the equal rights agenda that she appears to espouse. Anyway, she’d found some steak in the freezer and had made some sort of stew, which she called “hotpot”. Maybe it isn’t going to be so bad having her around after all.

As far as the investigation is concerned, things are going quite well. As I told Bernie, we should be able to make an arrest tomorrow or at worst in a couple of days. She pulled face when I told her that, until then, she was to stay at home and not take any risks, but she agreed not to jeopardise things by insisting on her freedom.
